| How do writers and choreographers approach the task of making new work? Where do you start? With whom do you work? How do you know when a piece is finished? What’s your relation to the actor or dancer? What’s the difference between making a dance and writing a play?
This range of questions was the starting point for Body and Page, a unique project where writers and choreographers met in a series of conversations and practical exchanges between September 2006 and March 2009 to discover more about composition their own methods and those of others.
Three e-books containing transcripts of these conversations and practical exchanges can be found to the right. These offer the reader an insight into widely differing approaches to composition. There is the directness and rawness of live conversation, where the participants were eager to make sense of their practice both for themselves and for others. Rather than delivering prepared statements and defending positions, you can hear the artists thinking aloud as they test and try out ideas new to them. It was a journey of discovery and learning.
